Help Center

Get the most out of ToneLayer.

ToneLayer translates your text between direct and diplomatic communication styles — and Clarity decodes what a message really means. Here's how to set it up and get help.

Getting started

Different ways to use ToneLayer, depending on where you're writing.

The app

Open ToneLayer, paste or type your text, choose a direction, and get your rewrite. Best for longer messages you want to review.

The keyboard

Rewrite text right inside any app — Messages, Mail, Slack — without copying and pasting. Setup steps are below.

Clarity

Works in reverse: decode an indirect message into its plain, literal meaning so you know what's actually being asked.

Set up the keyboard

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone, then go to General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
  2. Tap "Add New Keyboard" and choose ToneLayer from the list.
  3. Tap ToneLayer in your keyboard list and turn on Allow Full Access. This is required so the keyboard can send your text to be rewritten and return the result. Without it, rewrites can't run.
  4. Switch to it while typing by pressing and holding the globe key, then selecting ToneLayer.
About "Allow Full Access": ToneLayer only processes the text you choose to rewrite. It doesn't log your keystrokes or read what you type elsewhere. See the Privacy Policy for the full detail.

Frequently asked questions

The things people ask most often.

The keyboard doesn't appear when I type +

Two things to check. First, confirm the keyboard is added under Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards. Second, while typing, press and hold the globe key and pick ToneLayer from the list.

If it still doesn't show, restart your phone once — iOS sometimes needs a restart to register a new keyboard.

Rewrites aren't working from the keyboard +

This is almost always Allow Full Access being off. Go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → ToneLayer and turn it on. The keyboard needs this to send text out and bring the rewrite back.

If it's already on, check that you have an internet connection — rewrites need one.

The app and the keyboard give different results +

The app and keyboard are being brought into line so they produce matching results. If you notice a difference, the app gives the most complete rewrite. For an important message, run it through the app.

What's the difference between a standard and a deep rewrite? +

A standard rewrite is fast and handles most everyday messages. A deep rewrite takes a little longer and does more careful work — better for longer, higher-stakes, or more sensitive messages where nuance matters.

What is Clarity, and how is it different from a rewrite? +

A rewrite changes your message from one style to another. Clarity goes the other way — it takes a message you received that feels indirect or hard to read, and tells you what it plainly means and what's actually being asked.

What happens to my text? Is it private? +

Only the text you actively choose to rewrite is sent to be processed, and the result is sent back to you. ToneLayer doesn't record your keystrokes or read text you haven't asked it to rewrite.

Full details are in the Privacy Policy.

How do I manage or cancel a subscription? +

Subscriptions are handled by Apple. Go to Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions on your iPhone, select ToneLayer, and change or cancel there. Refund requests also go through Apple.
